Built By Hammond began from small beginnings, a carpentry subcontracting business that started shortly after we found out there was a baby on the way and it felt like the right time to take the leap.
After years of working with some of the best custom builders across the Bellarine, it was time for something more, a chance to create something of our own. That’s when SJ Hammond Constructions was launched, focusing on high-end carpentry, bespoke small projects and subcontract work for other builders.
What started with Sam trying to take those weekend projects full time quickly grew into a crew of three, with long-term project manager Ray and our first apprentice Charlie joining the team. Through hard work, word of mouth and the trust of local clients, the business gained momentum fast.
Those early days were far from perfect, but they taught us valuable lessons that shaped how we operate today. Each challenge pushed us to refine our systems and standards, laying the foundation for what would become Built By Hammond, our next step as a registered builder delivering architectural homes, renovations and extensions across the Bellarine, Geelong and the Surf Coast.
Since then we have revolutionised the way we operate. Our team has grown to include dedicated office staff, qualified carpenters, apprentices and project managers for every build, all sharing the same values we started with. Continuous coaching and system development have strengthened how we plan, manage and deliver each project.
Our structure allows us to not only make promises but deliver on them through every stage of construction and long after handover. Every home we build receives the same care, attention to detail and craftsmanship that has been part of our DNA since we set out.
I grew up on a dairy farm in country Victoria where hard work, accountability and doing things properly were drilled into you. If you said you were going to do something, you did it. That mindset still shapes how I build today.
After moving to the Bellarine in 2014, I set my sights on something bigger than the small town of fifteen hundred I’d grown up in. I made my way to Geelong, eventually meeting my fiancée Liv, a Queenscliff local, and we’ve since settled in Point Lonsdale having two kids, Huxley and Lilah.
We’re lucky to live and work in such a great part of the world. Building across the Bellarine for families who care about quality and detail is something I’m proud to be part of. I love finding out each person’s story and what makes this place so special to them.
When I started Built By Hammond, the goal was simple: create a company that people enjoy working with, and a workplace that brings out the best in our team. I wanted it to be a place built on trust, good communication and genuine pride in what we do.
What drives me most are the relationships we build, with our clients, our team and the local community. I’m proud of the people around me and the projects we create, and proud that we’ve stayed true to what matters.
